Scream Street Meets Astrosaurs

Thanks to Tony and all the staff at Pritchard’s Bookshop in Formby for a wonderful – if incredibly busy – day today!

We started with a visit to Linaker Primary School in Southport where I created some creepy chaos with my Vampires vs Werewolves Game Show before signing books for an hour.

Then it was a dash back to Formby to meet up with Astrosaurs and Cows in Action author, Steve Cole for his event…

…followed by an open-air signing back at the shop…

…where we were joined by my pal and future Scream Street character, Spider, and his utterly brilliant skateboard…

and Mortlock author, Jon Mayhew.

What a day – and I’m back at Pritchard’s again next Thursday!

Aaaargh!

They’re at it again!

18 months after myself and seven other children’s authors were taken hostage by terrifying monsters – they’re making some of us perform for their entertainment once more.  Mark Robson, Sam Enthoven, Ali Sparkes and I will be marched from our dark, damp caves next weekend and taken to Lincoln, where we will be forced to humiliate ourselves in front of an audience at the Lincoln Book Festival on Sunday 16th May.

Sadly, embarrassing authors isn’t enough for these heartless beasts for – at the end of the event – the audience will be made to vote to decide which one of us will be dragged back to the caves and EATEN!

So please, please come along if you can and vote for one of the other authors.  Sam looks quite tasty, and Ali’s had enough luck lately, what with winning the Blue Peter Children’s Book Prize and all.  I can’t go through a monster’s digestive system again.

I just can’t!

Return To Seven Stories

Thanks to everyone at Seven Stories for a wonderful time today – it was like coming home again!  For those who don’t know, I spent a year as writer-in-residence at the UK’s only centre for children’s books, and I can’t have done that bad a job as I’m occasionally asked back!

This visit was to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of my publisher, Walker Books – and I bumped into another familiar face from the company there… the Walker Bear…

April Cool!

If you’re a visitor to either Nick.com or Neopets.com – you’ll be in for a spooky surprise this April, as you could find yourself faced with a couple of groovy new Scream Street ads!

The ads are the work of my brilliant US publishers, Candlewick Press, and they link directly to the US Scream Street sitewww.screamstreet.com

So, watch out for Doug the zombie (that’s his ugly mug on the banners) and you could click through for some fiendish fun, courtesy of Scream Street!

Happy World Book Day (Sniff!)

Today is World Book DayHurray!

And I’m not running any events!  Boo!

I was supposed to be at Coleshill Heath School yesterday, Alcott Hall School today and Starbank Primary School tomorrow – but I’ve had to postpone all three visits because I’ve got a throat infection.  Yes, yours truly is completely mute.  I can’t even whisper.  And my throat hurts.  A lot.

Thanks for the sympathy.

Still, I’ve got a couple of (silent) treats up my sleeve for today – the first being a pdf file of spooktacular Scream Street activities that you can download from the World Book Day website here: http://www.worldbookday.com/assets_cm/files/pdf/10webA1P_Vampire_Activity_Sheets.pdf

You should also find some fun Scream Street information in your school’s World Book Day pack.

Have a great day!

The Wait For Eight…

Look what I’ve got!  An actual, honest-to-goodness copy of Scream Street 8: Attack of the Trolls!

The book will be published in just over a month now – so not long to wait…

Picture This

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is whether I draw the illustrations for my Scream Street books – and the answer is always a resounding NO!  I have all the artistic ability of a teaspoon.  My publishers, Walker Books, however knew of a very talented artist by the name of Lily Bernard who works for Cartoon Saloon – and it’s Lily who brings my characters and stories to life in picture form.

To demonstrate the process Lily takes, here are three images of one of my newer Scream Street characters – Kian Negative.  You can see how each image progresses from a preliminary sketch to get a feel for the character (which my editor, designer and I get to see and comment on) through an intermediate stage and finally onto the finished picture.

I’m sure you’ll agree that Lily is not only very talented, but she has a real grasp on the feel of the Scream Street series.  I’m very proud to be working with her.
